Frost provides extra peace of mind on the roughage market

9 February 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Like many other sectors, the forage trade has suffered from the winter conditions this week. Roads are more difficult to access, although farmers generally know how to keep their yard reasonably free of ice. The necessary food is delivered, but what can wait is rather postponed. Dry products can be transported without any problem, but with moist products the feed sometimes freezes on the truck.

Most traders indicate that it is quiet in trading this week. Farmers seem busy at the moment with the frost and the priority for purchasing roughage has been pushed to the background. This is also reflected in the prices. They have largely remained the same this week.

Grass seed hay and straw cost an average of €150 and €140 per ton respectively this week. Supply and demand remain fairly balanced. Pasture hay has become slightly cheaper this week and now costs €195 per ton.

More demand for silage
According to various traders, the demand for silage appears to be increasing somewhat. The supply of silage is also slowly increasing. Not too many pits are offered. Some livestock farmers expect to be left with silage and now want to take advantage of the relatively high price.

This week, silage maize is trading at an average of €70 per ton. However, due to the winter conditions, delivery this week will be postponed as much as possible. Feed potatoes are around €40 per ton this week. But just like the past few weeks, the offer is limited. The problem batches were already sold in the autumn and potatoes that are now in storage are purchased by the industry. Bierbostel continues to be available this week in notes of € 2,90 per percent dry matter.
