Ideal moment for Fast Spring Rye fertilization on the way
Fast Spring Rye is basically a unique hybrid rye and specially developed as a fodder crop between two maize crops. Fast Spring Rye is able to grow very quickly in early spring and already achieve a 4.000 to 5.000 kg dry matter yield with a protein percentage of 15-18% by mid-April.
To achieve this, an additional nitrogen and sulfur fertilization with mineral fertilizers is desirable. Because most Fast Spring Rye is sown as a catch crop after the maize harvest before October 1, Fast Spring Rye is in excellent condition on most plots. Because the weather forecasts are also favorable for a further favorable development, additional fertilization can be applied from now until the beginning of March. The advice is to fertilize at least 50 kg, but preferably 100 kg of pure nitrogen, supplemented with sulfur, per hectare. Where the fertilization space at farm level plays a role, in most cases this will be 50 - 80 kg. Practice has shown, however, that this also produces very good results.
Fertilization time depending on soil conditions
The best time to fertilize also depends on the soil conditions. It is of course not wise to want to fertilize under bad conditions, resulting in ruts. Due to structural damage, this has consequences for further development and yield. In addition, it can cause contamination of the mown crop with soil particles.
Sulfur next to nitrogen
Because the sulfur deposition has decreased in recent decades, additional sulfur fertilization is necessary to prevent sulfur deficiency. Sulfur (S) is needed in addition to nitrogen for the formation of proteins in the plant.
Fertilize in what form?
The most common way of fertilizing is to spread a mineral nitrogen-sulphur fertilizer, such as KAS with sulphur, ASS or ENTEC 26, with a common fertilizer spreader.
