Westland Kaas has taken a new step on the vegetarian market. The company has announced that from Monday 1 March all cheeses under the Maaslander brand will be vegetarian. It will also switch to recyclable adhesive packaging.
The full range of Maaslander, part of Westland Kaas, is vegetarian from this week. "Consumers are increasingly opting for a vegetarian diet," it reports. In the past 2 years, the number of Dutch people who eat vegetarian has grown by 150%. "With Maaslander, we are responding to these developments by making the range completely vegetarian. The animal rennet has been replaced by microbial rennet."
With this, Westland Kaas is taking a new step on the vegetarian market. In October last year the cheese company already announced that it wanted to market vegetable cheese spreads together with Those Vegan Cowboys, a project by Jaap Korteweg. Ultimately, the partners want to market a complete plant-based cheese line, including hard cheeses.
Reduce environmental impact
Maaslander's packaging is also being tackled. By using thinner foil for sliced packaging, 23% less plastic is used per kilo of cheese. "This saves 9.200 kilos of plastic every year. The new packaging will be recyclable." Ultimately, products such as shampoo bottles, flower pots, vacuum cleaner hoses and roadside bollards are made from it.
In the coming years too, efforts will be made to innovate in combination with reducing the environmental impact. "We have set a goal on the horizon to produce a 2036% climate-neutral cheese by 100," says Rachel Aalbers, marketing manager of Maaslander.
