After Westland Kaas, among others, Cono Kaasmakers is also focusing on the vegetarian market. The cheese maker says that almost all cheeses for the fresh produce shops and markets will be made with vegetarian rennet from March. In the coming period, this range will be expanded further with young cheeses and aged cheeses.
"The number of people eating vegetarian has grown by 2% in the past 50 years," said Cono Kaasmakers in a statement. "And the growth in the number of vegans and vegetarians will continue in the coming years." For the cheese maker, this is a reason to bet on that market. That is why almost all cheeses for the specialty fresh shops and markets are produced with vegetarian rennet from March.
The young cheeses also pass eventually. "That will happen after Easter," the company reports. The aim is to also market all age-old cheeses as vegetarian by the end of 2022. "We listen to the wishes of consumers. We have been investing in sustainability for years and want to innovate with a view to the future," adds general manager Wim Betten.
Westland Cheese does the same
Cono Kaasmakers is not alone in this transition. Beginning of March Westland Kaas has already announced that it will market the entire Maaslander range as a vegetarian product. Here the animal rennet has been replaced by microbial rennet.
