Cheese was very popular among the British last year

19 March 2021 - Kimberly Bakker

Due to the corona crisis, more had to be cooked at home last year. In Great Britain it has led to a particularly large increase in cheese sales. The latest data from market agency Kantar shows that sales of various cheeses have increased by 15% in volume and value increased by almost 17%. The year 2020 is therefore a record year.

The British bought considerably more cheese last year. Sales increased by 15,4% in volume and by 16,5% in value. This makes 2020 the new record year when it comes to cheese sales. The Kantar data also show that the total cheese volume increased by 72 million kilos last year. While regional, specialty and continental cheeses and soft cheeses achieved the highest volume growth, up 20%, cheddar remains the favourite. This is almost half of all sales, and an increase of 15%.

Corona pandemic as a cause
The researchers cited the corona crisis as the reason for the exceptional increase in cheese sales. Due to the measures taken to fight the virus, it was not possible for the British to eat out, like elsewhere in the world. In total, according to market agency Kantar, more than 1,2 billion more meals with cheese were made at home last year. It is an increase of 20% compared to the year before.

The British classic 'cheese on toast' led the way, with a plus of 35%. "However, it was the versatility and the ability to add more flavor to each dish that were the main driver for the increase. Spaghetti Bolognese is an example of a dish that only needs a minimal amount of cheese to change the taste experience," he said. the researchers. Last year, the dish was eaten 349 million times, an increase of 12% compared to the year 2019.
