Major dairy farm in Russia 70% completed

22 March 2021 - Kimberly Bakker

The construction of a large dairy farm in Russia, called Stupinskaya Niva, is 70% complete. This is reported by the Russian Ministry of Agriculture. When completed, there will be room for 3.500 dairy cows and 5.100 young stock. Milk production should amount to 34.000 tons per year.

Sergei Voskresensky, Russia's agriculture minister, visited Stupinskaya Niva last week. The dairy farm is to become one of the largest in the Moscow region. There is room for no fewer than 3.500 dairy cows and there is also room for 5.100 young stock. "Milk production should ultimately come to approximately 34.000 tons per year," says the minister.

The minister emphasizes that only modern milking equipment will be installed on the dairy farm and that the first tests are now being carried out. "The costs for this investment amount to almost €45 million," explains the agriculture minister. "It's worth it, though, because when the dairy farm reaches full capacity, it will create more than 120 jobs."

being self-sufficient
It is not surprising that the Russian ministry invests a lot in these kinds of projects. The government fully supports the sector. Last year, for example, more than 28,3 billion rubles were invested in the sector. Converted, this concerns an amount of €315 million. All of this should contribute to the goal of becoming self-sufficient.

In 2020 came the degree of self-sufficiency in milk at 84,1%, although the target is over 90%. The gross milk yield rose to 32 million tons, a plus of 855.000 tons compared to 2019 and the best result of the past 10 years. The average milk yield per cow rose to a record 6,6 tons.
