US pulls plug from Food Box program

19 April 2021 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The United States is ending the Farmers to Families Food Box Program. This program was intended to combat the hunger crisis by making and distributing food parcels to poor people. In 2020, 133 million of these food parcels have been delivered. The government is working on a new food program.

The cost of the food parcels was high. In fact, 6 times as much money was spent as originally budgeted for the food parcels. This is also due to the corona crisis. The food parcels are not evenly distributed across the country. Far fewer parcels were distributed in rural areas.

The program will be terminated in May and US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will see if the money can be used for other initiatives. He wants to hand out more food stamps and expand the capacity of existing food banks.

According to a dairy analyst, the announcement of the program's withdrawal may put pressure on prices as the program was expected to continue and new purchases have therefore been made.

Dairy Donation Program
The government is working on a new food program that gives away dairy products to food banks through donations and then distributes them to the people. The so-called Dairy Donation Program. This is to prevent food waste. The dairy that is donated is the surplus of the dairies, but also products with an expiration date approaching.
