Green light cheese factory Glanbia and Royal A-ware

23 April 2021 - Folkert Flapper

Glanbia and Royal A-ware received the green light on Tuesday (20 April) for the construction of a new cheese factory in Ireland. Environmental group An Taisce had filed lawsuits against the arrival of the cheese factory. The Supreme Court of Ireland has now decided that the construction of the cheese factory can definitely go ahead.

An Taisce is going to see if she can take further steps to prevent the construction. The Irish Farmers' Association believes that the legal battle is preventing a good conversation on the sustainability and development of the sector and is inviting the environmental movement to discuss the future of the countryside together. Glanbia says the new cheese factory will provide diversification that is desperately needed for rural Ireland due to Brexit.

Quota measures
Because Glanbia has been working for a long time to complete the construction of the cheese factory, the company has problems with processing. As a result, quota measures for the peak months will be introduced for milk suppliers in 2022. These quota measures should ensure that Glanbia does not run into problems with milk processing.
