Maize sowing starts towards the end of April under nice dry conditions. A bit later than last year, when the temperatures were much higher during the day and at night. With our 4 practical tips you will give your maize a good start!
Read the 4 tips from roughage specialist Antoon Verhoeven or watch them in the video below the text.
Tip 1: importance of the seedbed
A tight, flat seed bed, loose down to the sowing depth, is of great importance for good germination and early development of the maize. In a coarse seedbed there is also a greater chance of bird damage and less effective weed control.
Tip 2: the right seed amount
Adjust the number of seeds you sow to the time of sowing: now sow at least 100.000 seeds per hectare, with favorable weather at the beginning of May you can go up to 95.000 seeds. For grain maize, keep 5.000 seeds less.
Tip 3: soil temperature
For a smooth start, the soil must be sufficiently warmed up. Check the soil temperature before sowing to avoid emergence problems.
Tip 4: use moisture
On light soil it can be quite dry again, make sure you lose as little moisture as possible when tilling the soil and sow the maize a little deeper if necessary.
