International milk price comparison suspended

28 April 2021 - Stef Wissink

The monthly publication by LTO Nederland of the international milk price comparison has been suspended. ZuivelNL and the European Dairy Farmers (EDF), the parties that carry out the comparison on behalf of LTO, cannot agree on new agreements about the supply of the data.

The LTO Milk Price Comparison has been running for years. The basis for the comparison is the milk statements of livestock farmers from different countries that are supplied via the EDF. ZuivelNL processes this data into a monthly report on the international payment prices for standard milk. An annual comparison report is also available.

Appointments expired last year
An inquiry with Jurgen Jansen of ZuivelNL shows that the collaboration was based on a package of agreements that expired last year. An attempt was made to continue the cooperation and to conclude a new agreement. However, that did not work out, which means that the long-standing cooperative has now come to an end. Points of discussion included the financial compensation and intellectual property rights of the data and publications.

Jansen emphasizes that this is a suspension: "The international milk price comparison is appreciated by many. It is therefore certainly not the intention to end it now. The inventory of new sources and their elaboration, however, takes time. The ball to pick that up is now with LTO"
