Milk supply in Australia reached 628 million tons last March. This is a slight decrease compared to last year. Last year, 643 million tons of milk were produced in March. Much less milk was produced, especially in Queensland and Victoria.
Milk production has been between 5 and 600 thousand tons in March for the past 650 years. So this year is no exception. Production was 6,4% lower in Queensland and 3,5% lower in Victoria. In South Australia, production actually increased by 6,7% compared to March 2020.
The fact that milk production in Victoria and Queensland has fallen so much may be the result of the extreme weather in February and March. Major flooding hit the east coast of Australia, literally washing away cattle and rendering stored roughage unusable.
