The American dairy sector is getting a Fair Trade certification program. In this, financial premiums are provided to dairy farmers in order to optimize sustainability.
The certification program is the result of a partnership between Fair Trade USA and Chobani, an American food company specializing in Fair Trade Greek yogurt. “The Fair Trade USA certification – the first ever in the U.S. dairy industry – will help our dairy farmers continue to work hard to raise farming standards, care for workers and optimize animal welfare,” said Chobani founder Hamdi Ulukaya.
The Fair Trade certification offers dairy farmers and cooperatives the opportunity to differentiate themselves, increase consumer involvement and receive a financial premium for investments. The certification also provides greater support for farm workers in an industry who face challenges related to staff availability, working hours and operational safety.
Certification Process
The certification process typically takes 6 to 9 months. After certification, products can be promoted using the widely recognized Fair Trade Certified seal.
When Fair Trade certified milk is purchased, an additional amount is paid (Fair Trade Premium) which is then allocated to a Community Development Fund. Some of these funds are available to support investments needed to comply with the Fair Trade Standard.
Fair Trade products
Since 1998, Fair Trade producers in more than 45 countries have earned more than $465 million from Community Development Funds, which they have used to meet the greatest needs of their communities.
