The German milk supply in March lagged behind last year. As in the surrounding countries, the cool weather probably played a role. The milk flush starts later. Italian livestock farmers produced slightly more milk in March 2021 than the year before.
This is evident from the figures that Germany and Italy have reported to the European Commission. These countries traditionally provide these figures late compared to other countries. The total amount of milk collected in Germany in March amounted to 2.817.200 tons. That was 1,1% less than in March 2020. The total volume was still slightly above the 5-year average of 2.812.070 tons. The collected volumes of milk were continuously below last year's levels in the first 3 months of this year.
Italian milk supply slightly higher in March
The Italian milk supply in March was at a slightly higher level than last year, and was around the 5-year average. Italian milk processors collected a total of 2021 tons of milk in March 1084,99. Traditionally, milk supply in Italy also peaks in this month. This year's collection is virtually the same as the 5-year average of 1085,11 tons. Compared to March 2020, the collection was exactly 1% higher. Then 1069,18 tons of milk were collected.
