FrieslandCampina, Barenbrug, Agrifirm and the Dutch-American company Urus have set up a consortium in Nigeria with the aim of further developing the dairy chain in the African country. The pact, called Value4Dairy, is supported by the Nigerian government and aims to make the country more self-sufficient in dairy.
This is reported by the Ministry of Agriculture in its Agro-messages Abroad. The Dutch agro-concerns, active in milk processing, seeds, feed and genetics, want to lift the Nigerian dairy sector to a higher level, so that they can naturally benefit from it themselves. The starting point is to increase Nigeria's milk production in the coming years.
FrieslandCampina has been active in the country since the 50s and is entering into this partnership for the first time. The cooperative has its own dairy in Lagos, which mainly produces canned condensed milk, sachets of milk powder and UHT products under the Peak brand name. The required raw material is imported from the Netherlands, supplemented with local milk.
Long-term investment
The 4 companies want to invest in the project for the long term. By building the dairy chain from A to Z, they help to develop local dairy farms and the dairy industry. The cooperation of the companies can ensure development in every area of the dairy farming sector in Nigeria.
For example, Barenbrug can develop roughage production by breeding forage crops that suit the climate of Nigeria. Agrifirm can improve milk production and efficiency in the field of animal nutrition, ultimately with FrieslandCampina as the buyer of the local milk. The Urus company can help the dairy herd produce more efficiently.
