A group of dairy farmers in Germany protested today (Thurs 27 May) in front of the Bundeskartellamt in Bonn. Livestock farmers there complained about the low prices paid by milk processors, despite the improved global dairy market.
They therefore ask the cartel office to look at the power that the large milk processors would have in setting prices. Livestock farmers complain about the sharp rise in costs. International dairy prices have also risen sharply, but this has led to hardly any higher prices for farmers in Germany. According to the farmers, the milk processors are partly responsible for the situation that has arisen. They demand that more money comes into the pockets of the dairy farmers.
Butter and powder more expensive, milk hardly
Due to the improved international dairy market, the quotations of, among other things, butter and milk powder rose in Germany as well. Nevertheless, German milk processors remain reluctant to raise prices. According to the German Statistical Office (BMEL), the milk delivered in March was paid €34,27 per 100 kilos, at 4,21% fat and 3,49% protein. That was only €0,28 per 100 kilos higher than in February.
