With a milk production of 8.350.592 tons of milk in April, dairy farmers in the US are continuing to milk. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that milk production is 3,5% higher than April 2020. The milk supply of the 24 most important dairy states therefore continues a multi-year trend of growth. The largest dairy states in particular are increasing milk production.

In Texas, production increased by 7,7% compared to last year. Michigan is also a big increase with a 4,5% increase in milk production. In the slightly smaller dairy states such as Ohio, Oregon and Pennsylvania, milk production has increased slightly or even decreased slightly.

Good year despite crisis
The fact that milk production in the United States is increasing so quickly can be explained by the government support that dairy farmers have received due to the corona pandemic. The US government allocated $50 billion last year to compensate crop damage. Dairy farmers have also received a plus on the milk price of the equivalent of $2,36 per 100 kilos on milk production for a period of 6 months.

Because the milk price has maintained a good level during the corona year, many dairy farmers have the financial resources to invest in growth in milk production. Both the number of cows and milk production per cow increased in April 2021, which is an indication that dairy farmers can also feed those animals with good feed.
