'Within two days the new roof was on'

June 18, 2021

If you still have asbestos sheets in a shed or stable, it would be a good idea to replace them in good time. An apparently large project, but one that can be completed in no time. Livestock farmer Jan Vlaar now knows this from his own experience. He called in Middendorp Montage.

In Wijdenes, Noord-Holland, Jan Vlaar runs a livestock farm with beef cows. A small-scale company, where there was previously plenty of milking. "I took over the company from my father in 1977," says Vlaar. "I am now 74 years old and my son and daughter have a good job outside the door. Reason to gradually reduce."

Step ahead
Vlaar switched to beef cattle twenty years ago and has sold 7 of the 16 hectares of land. There are still twenty beef cows around and some sheep and lambs. In the winter months the cattle are housed in a stable behind the house. The stable whose roof was completely renovated last winter. "There was still asbestos on that roof," says Vlaar, who saw financial scope to invest in a more sustainable solution. "In the long run, all the asbestos will have to be removed because regulations prescribe it. I am now one step ahead of that."

In total, this involved approximately 750 square meters of roof with asbestos-containing corrugated sheets. In no time this was replaced by sandwich panels, which also gave the front and rear facade a new look. Vlaar: "A fellow entrepreneur from the region had good experiences with Middle Village Assembly from Kootwijkerbroek. That's how I came into contact with them."

Robust material
"In consultation with the representative, I opted for sandwich panels on the roof," continues the entrepreneur. "Corrugated sheets can cause cracks after a few years. Sandwich panels are made of more robust material. In addition, there is also insulation in between. This ensures that it is less warm in the summer and less cold in the barn in winter. Even though the cows are walking at night It's nice outside in the summer, but I I also have a few small bales of hay in the barn. With the asbestos sheets it could get terribly hot in the summer. That will certainly matter now."

In winter, Vlaar's cows are kept indoors. Yet they have noticed little or nothing of the roof renovation that was carried out in the middle of winter. "They started the remediation on Monday 25 January and the old roof was already finished the same day. The new roof, including light cassettes, was already on on Tuesday afternoon. That goes really quickly." The cattle have not suffered from the renovation. "They haven't even seen the outdoors," laughs Vlaar. "There is also an attic in the stable where the hay is. We covered this with plastic during the renovation, because of the asbestos"

In just four days
A day later, the side walls were also fitted with new sheeting (approximately 140 square meters of sheet piling) and the gutters were made to measure. "In total, the entire project took just four days," says Vlaar enthusiastically. "I really liked the collaboration with Middendorp Montage. They do what they say and keep to the agreements made. And I am very satisfied with the result."
