Australian milk supply remained more or less the same in April 2021 compared to the same month last year. There is a small downward correction.
With 623.000 tonnes of milk in April, Australia is halfway through a 6-month seasonal dip in milk production. This is 0,8% lower than in April 2020. The 5-year average for the month of April is 616.000 tons of milk, making the current milk supply 1,1% higher than this average. It is striking that milk production in Queensland has increased by 4,3% compared to last year and New South Wales by 2,7%.
The largest producing state Victoria has a small production decrease of 0,3% compared to April last year. There has also been a decline in levels across Australia. Compared to April last year, the fat content has dropped from 4,52% to 4,5% and the protein content from 3,54% to 3,51%.
Expectation
Australia's milk production remains in a trough until July, followed by a rapid increase to a peak in October. Australia has had a downward trend in milk production over the past 5 years. The total dairy herd decreases every year and more milking per cow cannot fully compensate for this loss.
