5 July 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

Canadian dairy processor Saputo announced today (July 5) to acquire British cheese producer Wensleydale Dairy. The acquisition is expected to close this month (July).

Saputo, one of the 10 largest dairy producers in the world, processes milk into a wide range of dairy products. The company is headquartered in Montreal, Canada and is active in Canada, Australia, Argentina and the United States, among others.

Wensleydale Dairy produces and sells a variety of cheeses, including the well-known brand of Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese. The company's 2 facilities in North Yorkshire employ around 210 people and some 40 local dairies supply milk to the cheese factory. The range of cheeses is exported worldwide.

Market position abroad
Saputo pays approximately $39 million (just under €33 million) for Wensleydale Dairy and wants to strengthen its position in the United Kingdom. Saputo is pleased to add another leading and prominent British cheese brand to its portfolio. “Not only is it a renowned UK company with high quality products and award winning cheeses, but our corporate cultures are well aligned and I am delighted to welcome the whole team to the Saputo family,” said Lino A. Saputo, CEO of Saputo, in the statement.
