The spring peak in milk production in Poland is always recorded in May, but this year the peak in milk supply is much higher than normal. In Italy, milk production traditionally peaks in March. In both Poland and Italy, milk supplies reached levels never before achieved.

Poland
The Polish milk supply, which has been showing significant growth for years, also increased again in May. The total milk collection amounted to a volume of 1.127.620 tons. That is 1,5% more than production in May 2020, which was 1.111.090 tonnes at the time. The milk collection was also significantly higher compared to the 5-year average (1.092.620 tons), which well reflects the increasing trend in the Polish milk supply. Compared to this average, milk production in May 2021 was about 3,1% higher.

A webinar was recently organized by the Dutch-Polish Chamber of Commerce and the Dutch Agricultural Council in Poland. This outlined the perspective for the development of the Polish milk lake. Although the growth of the livestock farming sector in Poland may also gradually experience more obstacles due to, for example, the European Green Deal and the scarcity of land and labor, there is still plenty of room for growth. In the best-case scenario, the total milk supply will grow by another 2030% until 50, outlined an analyst from investment bank BNP Paribas.

Italy
The strong increase in milk supply in Italy is striking. Milk collection in the country so far this year has been hovering around last year's levels. In May, however, milk production skyrockets to its highest level ever. In May 2021, 1.117.000 tons of milk were delivered to processors. That is no less than 10,5% (107.000 tons) more than in the same month last year. Compared to the 5-year average, the increase is approximately 3,9%. The 5-year average for the Italian milk collection is 1.075.000 tons.
