Forage trade is waiting for a change in the weather

27 July 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

There is not much trade in the roughage market. The grain and grass harvests have largely come to a standstill due to the changeable weather. The supply of straw is therefore limited and there is also little new hay and silage on the market. A period of steady weather would greatly help the harvest and thus trade.

The barley straw from the new harvest varies considerably in quality, according to various traders. Pressing pushes the edge of what is possible and occasionally goes beyond it. The DCA Indicative Price for good barley straw is €110 per tonne.

The first wheat straw of the new harvest is now also on the market, albeit in small quantities. There appears to be sufficient straw, but that is no guarantee that sufficient straw will come onto the market, several traders warn. "The arable farmer must let the straw fall and not chop it" is a frequently heard phrase. Prices quoted for wheat straw are €115 to €120 per tonne.

Feed potatoes are almost impossible to obtain
The demand for by-products and residual products continues to grow quietly. As in recent weeks, feed potatoes are difficult to obtain. The DCA Indicative Price for feed potatoes is €42,50, if they are available at all. The demand for and supply of spent grain remains fairly well balanced. This is also reflected in the price, which remains at €2,65 per percent dry matter.

Many livestock farmers have been able to extract more than enough silage in recent months. There is therefore less demand for silage at the moment compared to recent dry years. The DCA Indicative Price remains at €60 per tonne this week for good silage grass this season. There is also some trade in grass from the previous season and, depending on the quality, the price is significantly lower.

Not much interest in hay
There is also not much trade in meadow hay. Many livestock farmers have brought in sufficient and good hay themselves and, according to several traders, are not keen to buy it from the market. The demand for hay mainly comes from horse farming. The DCA Indicative Price for meadow hay is €170 per tonne.

There is currently less interest in grass seed hay than in recent years. Prices at most traders are around or slightly above the straw price. The supply of grass seed hay is still limited. Here too, rain is delaying the harvest, although some threshing was done last week.
