A total of 1.100.069 tonnes of milk was delivered to Irish milk processors. That is about 40.000 tons more than last June. Irish milk production has been expanding for a long time.

More milk almost every month
Irish dairy farmers have produced more milk every month except May this year than the same month a year earlier. In May and June the lead increased somewhat further. The volume in June (1.100.069 tons) was also above the 5-year average of 1.017.000 tons of milk. Compared to this average, production this year was even 83.000 tons (+7,5%) higher. Compared to the previous month of May, production has declined slightly and the spring peak in milk supply is behind us.

Research shows: Irish dairy farming works at low costs
A large-scale study by the European Milk Board recently showed that Irish dairy farmers produced milk at the lowest cost in the entire European Union in the period between 2015 and 2019. The cost price for a kilo of milk in 2019 was €0,3421. This was considerably lower than the European average of €0,4535 per kilo of milk. The relatively low cost price may be one of the triggers for the rapid growth of the Irish milk pool over the past 1 years, which increased by about 10% during this period.
