Italian dairy farmers also supplied considerably more milk in June of this year than in the same month last year. Milk supply in the country has been above the level of 2020 all year round.
Milk production in Italy has been fairly stable for years. However, in the months of May and June of this year, the milk supply increased considerably (compared to a year earlier and the 5-year average). Apparently Italian dairy farmers want to benefit from the relatively high milk prices. In May, production was about 10% higher than the year before and barely 4% above the 5-year average.
There was also hard milking in June
In June, Italian dairy farmers delivered 1.029.026 tons of milk to processing companies. That is almost 50.000 tons, or 5%, more than the milked volume in 2020. Compared to the multi-year average, the supply is about 30.000 tons (3%) higher. Compared to May, the supply has decreased and the spring peak is clearly behind us.
The significant increases compared to last year are somewhat flattering. The Italian government called on dairy farmers to produce less milk during the corona pandemic. This could relieve some of the pressure on the market. However, the increases compared to the multi-year average productions show that there has been a trend break in recent months: the Italian milk pool is currently growing considerably.
