Livestock farmers in the United States are able to maintain the high milk production. Also in July, the supply figures are well above those of the same month last year.
In the top 24 milk-producing states of the United States, both dairy herds and production per animal increased in July. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), there were 136.000 more cows on farms, with each cow producing almost 5 more liters of milk per month than in July 2020.
Strong growth again
The total milk supply for the month of July grew by 2,1% to a total of 8.300.470 tons. Last year milk production was still 8.115.420 tons. The growth is therefore slightly smaller than in June, when milk production increased by 3,2% compared to the previous year. For the entire second quarter, growth was even higher at 3,7%. Compared to the 5-year average, the milk supply in July was approximately 282.000 tons higher. That is an increase of about 3,5%.
Although milk production in the United States has been growing for years, the expansion is considerably faster this year. The growth rates of recent months imply that milk production is increasing between 150.000 and 250.000 tonnes every month.
