New Zealand dairy farms achieved the highest milk supply for the month in July. Is this a harbinger for the rest of the 2021/22 kiwifruit milking season?
It is not very much, because milk production in this winter month amounts to 305.000 tons. This also makes sense in New Zealand, because the majority of cows in grass-based dairy farming are in the dry period. In the months of June, the start of the new milk season, and July, milk supply is traditionally at a low point. The calving period has started this month, causing milk production to skyrocket again.
July production doubled
To illustrate: in June this year production was 234.000 tons, while last October (the peak of the last milk season) milk production was well above 3,2 million tons. Yet milk production in New Zealand has been increasing in the winter months in recent years. For example, in 2016, milk production in July amounted to 147.000 tons. That has more than doubled 5 years later, in the past month.
This may indicate that New Zealand dairy farming will again significantly increase milk production in the 2021/22 season, just like last season. Much of course depends on the growing season of the grass and the conditions on the dairy market, which makes or discourages the purchase of additional roughage. In addition, despite another warning, Fonterra issued a warning that New Zealand's milk production has almost reached its peak and that there is no more room for dairy farming in the country due to environmental regulations.
