Australia closes the milk season with a small plus

31 August 2021 - Eric de Lijster

The dairy farmers in Australia concluded the 2020/21 milking season a few weeks ago. In June, the last month of the season, the milk supply was lower than the previous season. In the end, the dairy farms milked more over the entire 12 months than in the 2019/20 season.

This is evident from the figures that Dairy Australia published on Friday, August 27. The milking season in Australia runs from July to June. Over the past month of June, the volume of milk supplied to milk processors amounted to more than 641.200 tons. This is a decrease of 1,1% compared to July last year.

New South Wales the riser
Especially in Victoria, Australia's largest dairy state, dairy farms supplied less milk. There, milk production fell by 2,1% in June to almost 415.900 tons. Milk supplies in Tasmania also suffered a relatively strong decline: around 42.400% less milk was produced there, at more than 4,7 tonnes. In New South Wales, on the other hand, milk supplies actually increased by 3% to 88.850 tonnes, demonstrating the variation in Australia.

The total milk supply for the 2020/21 season ultimately amounts to more than 9.136.000 tons. This is an increase of 0,6% compared to the 2019/20 season. Here too, the influx from New South Wales is taking part of the growth, in addition to Victoria. Australian dairy producers have managed to use up the extra milk in recent months. Exports of dairy products have increased significantly. On the other hand, the products sold brought in less money.
