The milk supply in our country also shows a decrease in August, although the contraction is less sharp than in the preceding months. But then there is another caveat.
The Dutch milk supply last month amounted to 1.123.391 tons, according to figures from RVO based on data provided by dairy companies. This is a decrease of 1,48% compared to the same month last year. Milk production is therefore recovering somewhat from the sharp decline in July, which was more than 3%.
Weather conditions were favorable for milk production last month with temperatures below the long-term average, which may somewhat make up for the sharp decline earlier this summer. It should be noted that milk production suffered a dip last summer due to high temperatures. There was a national heat wave that month. With much more favorable production conditions, production this year is also considerably lower.
Seasonal decline
Milk production nevertheless shows a seasonal decline that will continue for a few weeks. In August the average daily production was 36.238 tons compared to 36.722 in July. The average fat content was slightly higher than last year: 4,29% compared to 4,21% in 2020.
The lower milk supply is clearly noticeable in the market. The DCA spot milk quotations, which were well above €40 in mid-September, underline the tight supply. This is reinforced by the good valorization of cheese, milk powder and butter, which means that liquid products are sought after.
