FrieslandCampina, together with other food giants, is launching a method to calculate carbon sequestration in cattle production systems and to use it as a reliable calculation model
The methodology, C-sequ, is being tested in various places around the world. Frieslandcampina also makes the method available for pilots among members.
According to FrieslandCampina, it is the first method based on life cycle analysis (LCA). This means that the recording must be justified in a scientifically substantiated and recognized manner. Until now, it has been difficult to clearly and credibly indicate to everyone how much carbon is captured in plants and soil. The new method should change that.
Global Dairy Platform
The partners in the development process were Arla, Fonterra, Nestlé, Danone, Mars, McDonald's and the Innovation Center for US Dairy. The project was realized under the leadership of the Global Dairy Platform, of which FrieslandCampina CEO Hein Schumacher is now the chairman.
While testing of the C-Sequ methodology is already underway in more than 100 different production systems around the world, additional additional dairy and beef pilots are encouraged to further improve the methodology. The results of these tests will be incorporated into an updated methodology, which will be released next year, FrieslandCampina reports. We are now working according to the guidelines of version 1.0.
