Cheese group Royal Bel Leerdammer in Schoonrewoerd will have a new general manager after the takeover by the French dairy group Lactalis. Under his leadership, a new strategy must be developed.
Bel Leerdammer reports this in an announcement to the suppliers. Jan Verbessem will be the general manager who will manage the current Dutch management. Verbessem is now commercial manager for Belgium and the Netherlands and has been working at Lactalis since 2009. Before that he worked for several years for the VanDrie Group.
New name
The name of the Dutch company will remain Royal Bel Leerdammer until further notice. That won't last. There will be a new name, but it also has to be validated first, it is reported. This may have to do with the 'royal' title that Bel Leerdammer carries. A new strategy can also be expected in some time, the suppliers are told.
Lactalis indicates that it is pleased with the acquisition of the Leerdammer cheese brand. "It is number one in Europe in the sliced cheese market, number two in the total German cheese market, number four in the French market and number three in the Italian hard cheese market," it sums up.
