The nomination of Sybren Attema as new chairman of the board of FrieslandCampina has led to relieved reactions. His partner in the merger of Friesland Foods and Campina, Kees Wantenaar, is happy. The driver Frans van den Hurk, who resigned out of dissatisfaction with decisiveness, is also relieved.
Attema himself does not want to make any further comments until his formal appointment, he said. Attema has been self-employed again since August of this year CEO of Attema Consultancy. He is also on the Advisory Board of Anders Invest, a charity investor. Before that he worked as CEO of development organization ICCO and COO of Cordaid.
Until the end of 2010, Attema was a director (vice-chairman) and supervisory director at FrieslandCampina. He then works for the company in Vietnam. Together with Cees Wantenaar, he was the driving force behind the merger of Friesland Foods with Campina.
'A good step'
Wantenaar is happy that Attema is being brought back. “It's a good step,” he says. Wantenaar has also followed the developments in the past period with care and regularly crooked toes, but does not want to comment further on this. Nor does it concern whether he has recently interfered with developments surrounding the cooperative. "They have to solve it themselves, but of course I still feel involved and am happy that this has happened," he says.
The recently resigned Brabant director and commissioner Frans van den Hurk (photo above) is also pleased with Attema's appointment. "I am very happy about that. Of course it should not stop there, but it is a very good step." Van den Hurk has no further comment. "Now it is up to the incoming chairman to take further steps, and I will stop at that."
Attema's name had been circulating for some time as a possible chairman, but it seemed a far-fetched option. Attema is no longer an active dairy farmer, which means there are statutory obstacles in the way. However, the current board of FrieslandCampina proposes to remove these obstacles through a temporary amendment to the articles of association.
