The UK arm of Arla aims to increase the supply of organic milk by 5% over the next 50 years while tightening production requirements for organic milk.
Arla wants to increase the supply from 180 to 270 million liters because last year it turned out that the organic segment is growing fastest in the supermarket. While the average market growth for conventional dairy was 5,6%, this growth for organic dairy was 9,4%.
Organic 2.0
To further sharpen the more sustainable image of organic dairy, Arla has set extra rules for its own organic farmers in the so-called Organic 2.0 package. For example, organic dairy farmers must switch to 100% green energy, CO2 emissions must be reduced by 2% 30 years earlier than is the case with conventional farms and the minimum number of days of grazing has increased from 120 to 150. In addition, members must work with healthier soil, more biodiversity and animal welfare. Organic farmers have until 2028 to comply with the rules.
The stricter rules for organic dairy farming do not only apply to the 114 members in Great Britain. All approximately 900 organic member farms throughout Northwestern Europe will be affected.
