VanDrie also gets involved in the battle for pasture cattle

1 November 2021 - Klaas van der Horst

More and more parties are getting involved in the battle for Dutch pasture cattle. VanDrie subsidiary Ameco is also the last party for the time being, with a premium of 10 cents per kilo of meat on top of the normal market price. This premium seems to be a must to maintain the supply.

None of the larger beef slaughterers and other companies in the meat chain want to lose the battle for pastured meat and the necessary supply of cattle for slaughter.

According to data from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) Between 520.000 and 580.000 cattle are slaughtered annually. The majority of these qualifies for the designation of pasture-raised cattle, as more than 80% of Dutch dairy farmers practice pasture grazing.

Previously, the combinations DOC Kaas - Gosschalk, A-ware - Albert Heijn and FrieslandCampina - Verheijen - Jumbo joined the battle for Dutch pasture beef. FrieslandCampina, like Ameco, offers an extra surcharge of 10 cents per kilo of meat. A-ware does not mention any additional costs, while no additional costs are known for DOC Cheese.

A large part of the pastured beef ends up in the store as minced meat. Other origins are often used for the more expensive and luxurious beef, although rosé meat is also an option.

Beef prices have risen sharply in recent years. Not only in the Netherlands, but also abroad.

The average meat price for cow meat in Europe this year also differs significantly in a positive way compared to previous years.
