Biggest bustle behind on the roughage market

2 November 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

With the completion of the maize harvest, things will calm down a bit on the roughage market. The trade in, for example, hay and straw is going well, according to various traders, but it is not overly busy. An exception to this are the by-products, which remain in high demand.

The demand for by-products remains as good as ever. Steam peels, potato press fiber and spent grain are in great demand. The DCA Indicative Price of spent grains this week amounts to €3 per percent dry matter. That is €0,10 higher than last week. The price of feed potatoes remains the same at €45 per tonne, but just like in recent weeks, there is little supply.

Little trade in corn
The harvest of silage maize is almost complete. The harvest of CCM or MKS is now also almost over. Due to the high prices of concentrates and single raw materials, more livestock farmers who had leftover corn appear to have opted for CCM or MKS instead of selling by stem. Partly because of this and because the chopping season is almost over, the trade in silage maize is at a low level. The DCA Indicative Price remains the same as last week at €60 per tonne.

The straw trade is going well, but it is not overly busy. Demand currently mainly comes from horse farming and bulb cultivation. Some livestock farmers also do something, but it must be offered competitively. According to several traders, the stocks of good straw are not large. This is not only the case in the Netherlands, but also in France and Germany, for example. The expectation is that the straw price will therefore have room to rise. For the time being, there is little sign of this and the DCA indicative price remains at €125 per tonne for both wheat and barley straw.

Little demand and little supply of grass seed hay
With meadow hay, it is mainly horse farmers who are on the market. The DCA Indication Price remains stable at €180 per tonne. There is not much interest in grass seed hay, but there is also very little supply of good grass seed hay. Prices therefore remain at a reasonable level. For Engelsraai, the DCA Indication Price is €130 per tonne, Roodzwenk is €150 per tonne and Reed Festive and Veldbeemd are in between at €140 per tonne.

Silage grass is traded, but most traders are certainly not busy. The buyers are mainly goat farmers and intensive dairy farmers. These are customers who place high demands on the feed. There is therefore a market for good silage. It is difficult to find a buyer for the lesser potholes. The DCA Indicative Price remains at €60 per tonne.
