Ration asks for supplementation here and there

16 November 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The forage trade continues at a steady pace. The normal work is going well, but according to most traders it is not really busy. The market is therefore as you would expect at this time of the year.

Several traders have noticed that livestock farmers are tinkering with the rations relatively often this autumn. On the one hand because of relatively high pellet prices, but also to keep the milk well supplied to the cows. The levels in the grass silages in particular require some supplementation here and there to optimize the feed value.

Good demand for by-products
The demand for by-products remains good. What comes onto the market easily finds a destination. This actually applies to all (solid) by-products. The DCA Indicative Price for spent grains this week is €3 per percent dry matter, which is the same as last week.

Feed potatoes still remain in limited supply. Every now and then something comes along that is not suitable for processing, but is good enough for feed according to various traders. The DCA Indicative Price for feed potatoes remains the same as last week at €45 per tonne.

Little trade in corn
The trade in silage maize is very quiet. According to traders, they are still looking for a customer for the single plot of corn that is still fixed. Especially because the quality of those very late plots is often not optimal. The trade in silage maize currently mainly consists of incidental loads to livestock farmers who discover that they still need some extra maize to bridge the period until the new silage. The DCA Indicative Price for good corn from the silage this week amounts to €70 per tonne delivered to the farmer.

The demand for straw remains quite good. This partly comes from livestock farmers and there is also quite a lot of demand for straw from bulb cultivation. There is plenty of choice, although the quality occasionally leaves a lot to be desired. The DCA Indicative Price for good wheat and barley straw remains the same as last week at €125 per tonne.

Good silage grass
There is not much trade in silage grass, but good grass is easy to lose according to several traders. However, there is hardly any interest in the lower quality silage grass. The DCA Indicative Price for silage remains at €60 per tonne.

There is also not much trade in hay. There is currently not much interest in meadow hay from livestock farming. The DCA Indicative Price this week is €180 per tonne. There is little supply of good grass seed hay, but on the other hand there is little demand. The DCA Indicative Price remains unchanged and ranges from €130 to €150 per tonne depending on the variety.
