EEX launches new European cheese indices

17 November 2021 - Wouter Baan

The European Energy Exchange (EEX) has launched new indices for various types of cheese. The intention is to make the cheese market more transparent with this.

The indices are drawn up weekly on Wednesdays for Gouda cheese, cheddar (mild and curd) and mozzarella. The input for this is collected from various, in their own words, leading dairies that trade the cheeses.

More transparency
Peter Blogg, agricultural commodity expert at the EEX, indicates that the new indices are the next step towards greater transparency on the European dairy market. There were already indices for butter, whey powder, skimmed milk powder and milk. There is also an index for potatoes.

The initiative of the EEX is not the first initiative for greater transparency on the European cheese market. For several years now, DCA Markets has been publishing spot prices for almost all dairy products, including the cheeses mentioned above.
