Trading on the roughage market is as usual for this time of year. Normal trade continues, but otherwise it is somewhat tame according to various forage traders. The by-products are still an exception, which is what the candidates are pushing for.
The demand for silage is there, but the supply is disappointing. Most of the grass on offer is in the 'suitable for young cattle' category. The good grass that is suitable for goats, for example, is hardly available. Due to the tight supply of good silage grass, the price remains stable at €65 per tonne. The price range is approximately between €60 and €70 per tonne.
There is only limited trade in silage maize. Stock is in order at most livestock farmers and farmers who buy are mainly regular customers who have little storage space. The DCA Indicative Price remains the same as last week at €70 per tonne.
Hay is not being sold much at the moment. Demand from livestock farming is moderate, the trade that is generated is mainly with horse farmers. The DCA Indicative Price remains the same at €190 per tonne. There is also not much demand for grass seed hay. On the other hand, there is also little supply of beautiful grass seed hay. The DCA Indicative Prices range from €130 per tonne for English Swizzle to €150 per tonne for Red Fescue.
The demand for straw remains quite good. Buyers can certainly be found for the beautiful lots. That is a challenge this year, by the way. According to several traders, there is quite a lot of mediocre stuff on the market. The DCA Indicative Price remains at €130 per tonne for both wheat and barley straw.
Good demand, little supply
Feed potatoes are difficult to obtain, as they have been throughout the season. "Everything that still resembles a potato largely disappears to the processing industry," said a trader. As far as there is trade, the price remains at €45 per tonne.
The demand for by-products and residual products remains as good as ever. There will be a buyer almost immediately for what becomes available. Various suppliers are already reporting waiting times for various products of up to two weeks or more. The DCA Indicative Price for spent grain remains the same as last week at €3,10 per percent dry matter.
