Beef exports from Argentina fell by 30,9% in October, compared to the same month last year. Compared to last month, a decrease in the export volume (-25%) is also visible. An increase in prices in the main markets, such as China and the European Union, has limited the loss in value.
In October, a total of 33.638 tons of Argentine beef was shipped abroad. According to data from the Argentine Institute for the Promotion of Beef (Ipcva), the average FOB price was about $10.100 per tonne, for chilled cuts (boneless). The frozen boneless cuts were paid close to $5.650. These prices are 1,3% higher than in September, according to Ipcva, and 44,5% higher than in October last year.
Major exporter
Argentina is one of the top five beef exporters in the world, with China, Germany and Chile as the main destinations. The total value of beef exports was $240,9 million in October. That was 0,9% lower than the $243,1 million in October last year. In the first ten months of this year, 676.000 tons of beef were exported by Argentina. Of this, 365.500 tons went to China.
Mario Ravettino, President of the Consortium of Argentine Meat Exporters: "The improved prices in key destinations, such as China and the European Union, combined with the incidence of tariff quotas contributed to these results."
Boycott
Belarus announced this week that it will boycott beef and other products from Europe from January 1, 2022. This measure is a response to sanctions imposed by various Western countries on 'Belarus' late last week. For the time being, nothing is known about a boycott on meat from South America. This creates opportunities for beef exports from Argentina to Russia.
