As in many other large dairy countries, French milk production is also lagging behind the level of a year ago. The contraction in October is about the same as that in September.
French livestock farmers delivered 1.914.780 tons of milk to processing companies in October. That is approximately 40.000 tons less than in October last year, a decrease of 2%. Last year the milk supply was still 1.954.330 tons.
Second contraction month in a row
French milk production has been relatively stable for a number of years, but has now been significantly below multi-year averages for two months. Over the past five years, 1.959.300 tons were produced in October. This means that milk production this year is 2% below the multi-year level. In September, French milk production was also several percent below last year's level and the long-term averages.
Almost 100.000 tons less milk
France is - after Germany - the largest milk producer in Europe. The significant shrinkage certainly plays a role in the current high prices on the dairy market. Together with the contraction in Germany, the decline means that in these two countries alone, almost 100.000 tons less milk was available in October. That is 9% of Dutch milk production that is lost in these two neighboring countries.
