The Milieukeur foundation (SMK) is further tightening the requirements for Planet proof milk. Next year, for example, 5% more protein from our own land will be needed and also 5% more herb-rich grassland plus a company nature plan. This is to the dismay of not only dairy farmers. Processors are also concerned about the feasibility and shelf life of the entire package.
This was already evident during the hearing held at the beginning of November, prior to the adoption of the new requirements for the coming year. Judging from the final requirements for 2022 limited account has been taken of the objections raised. Transitional periods do apply to some of the requirements.
Mitigating measures, such as including neighborhood contracts, cannot yet be included, because the cycle pointer (which is often used to extract data for the PlanetProof scheme) has not yet been set up to include these contracts.
FrieslandCampina doubts the feasibility
The proposed package of additional requirements was a reason for FrieslandCampina to express her concern. According to a speaker at the hearing, a relevant portion of farmers must be able to (continue to) comply in order to have an impact on sustainability and also be able to meet market demand. Livestock farmers must also continue to see returns for their efforts and there must be sufficient stability among the group of participants. FrieslandCampina therefore asked the Board of Experts to take a closer look at the feasibility before the requirements were determined. FrieslandCampina has between seven hundred and eight hundred members who participate in the PlanetProof scheme.
Conflicting requirements and resource requirements
Individual livestock farmers expressed their concerns about the conflict between various requirements. According to them, it is very difficult to maintain an extra large area of herb-rich grassland and at the same time get much more protein from your own land. Concerns were also expressed about all kinds of additional drug regulations and the certifications that would be necessary according to SMK experts. Because extra attention is paid to the mobility of cows in particular, a mobility score will be introduced as of January 1, 2024, for which, for example, a certified hoof trimmer must be used.
The idea of it Board of Experts SMK dropped a mandatory workshop on 'human-animal interaction' because almost all livestock farmers found this insulting.
No consumer or retail
One point to which SMK did not provide a clear answer was a participant's question as to why there was no consumer present at the discussions about the PlanetProof requirements and no one from retail, even though the question on the table was what these parties see as salable sustainable products.
Relaxations have also been implemented for some scores, such as for KalfOK and Longevity. This was done to prevent 'unwanted stimuli', such as the removal of healthy old cows, in order to increase the registered age for the removed cows.
