A-ware has submitted a permit application this month - in collaboration with Fonterra - to further expand the production location in Heerenveen. The dairy company has not yet said what the plans are in concrete terms.
The plans don't come out of the blue. Next to the factory in Heerenveen is a vacant lot that is owned by A-ware. It has never been a secret that this site could potentially be used to further scale up production in the future. The new license refers to 300.000 tons of cheese, the Friesch Dagblad reports.
The current factory is said to produce 170.000 tons of cheeses annually, for which about 12% of the Dutch milk lake is used. You could conclude that the license application is ambitious. The company reports that it wants to develop the cheese dairies together with Fonterra, which is part of the multi-year strategy.
A-ware will only announce what the plans are in concrete terms when the permit has actually been granted.
