The new German agriculture minister, Cem Özdemir (pictured), argues for higher food prices. "Sometimes I have the feeling that good motor oil is more important to us than good salad oil. Food should not become a luxury good, but the price should express the ecological value more strongly," said Özdemir in the German newspaper Bild.
Özdemir announced binding regulations to make food healthier in Germany. He claims that German food is generally unhealthy and that as a result 50% of Germans are overweight. "The reason for this is too much sugar, fat and salt, especially in finished finished products". The agriculture minister wants to ban commercials for products containing sugar.
No 'junk prices' for food
Cem Özdemir spoke out harshly against dumping prices for food. "There should be no more junk prices for food, they drive farms into ruins, promote the extinction of species and pollute the climate. I want to change that," said the minister. He wants people in Germany to value their food as much as their cars. "Sometimes I have the feeling that good motor oil is more important to us than good salad oil. Food will probably not become a luxury good. But the price should express the ecological value more strongly."
Area organic to 30%
The Minister of Agriculture also aims to expand the area of organically grown fruit and vegetables from almost 2030 to 10% by 30. Also, catering in public facilities must be converted into regional and organically grown products. Cem Özdemir has been Minister of Agriculture since December 2021. He is a member of the De Grünen party.
