After some struggles with box lime in big bags and in bulk, Mts. van Emst switched to bulk lime (Hygomix) last year and had a batch blown into an empty silo. Successfully. ''When it is delivered in bulk, this results in a bit of ease of work, a considerable price difference and good hygiene in our cubicles with separated manure'', concludes employee Janmarten van Wijhe.
Adding lime is at Mts. van Emst in Hattem has been a regular fixture in cleaning the deep litter boxes for many years. ''In the morning we rake out the wet spots. Then we put a shovel of lime over it so that we get the boxes stable again.” Van Wijhe is referring to raising the pH value and thus limiting the bacterial pressure. This is often seen when spreading with separated manure.
No more 'wrong stuff'
Van Wijhe saw in practice that one lime supply is not the same. ''Lime in big bags produces a lot of waste and was often quite stuck in them'', the Veluwe farmer experienced. Reason enough for him to try a loose batch. That went well, until it turned out during a rain shower that they had not completely covered the lime. ''Then it's all wrong. So let's blow it into the silo now. At the moment it's great, 100% of the lime is good to use."
100 euros p/ton price difference
The fact that the lime does not have to be bagged and brought with a bulk truck, makes a significant difference in the purchase price. "If you compare it with, for example, two separate big bags, Hygomix in the silo saves you about €100 per ton," calculates product specialist Henry Westerink van Berg Fourage. "The only investment is a silo, but if you have one empty or can buy one cheaply, it can be sold very quickly."
