In concrete terms, this concerns milk that must meet the requirements of 'Haltungsform' 2030 or 3 by 4 at the latest. These are the forms of husbandry with the highest requirements. In companies that fall under 'Haltungsform' 1 or 2, tying up cows is still permitted. This form of livestock farming is relatively common in the south of Germany. All the big ones German supermarkets use the four criteria mentioned to indicate the animal welfare level, not only for dairy products, but also for meat.

At Aldi, the introduction of a higher dairy segment is accompanied by a price increase. Producers get paid more, consumers have to pay a little more. Dairy farmers grumble that they do not always get paid extra, but that the industry keeps the extra income for itself.

Aldi is often a forerunner in the German food industry. When Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord take a step, or enter into a new contract with suppliers, other large German supermarkets often follow that move.
