Arla stops raising milk prices

24 January 2022 - Wouter Baan

Arla's milk price will not rise further before February. This is striking, given that dairy prices have continued to gain ground in recent weeks.

The basic milk price for Dutch members remains at €42,63 per 100 kilos in February. The maximum milk price is €45,25 per 100 kilos. In the Boerenbusiness Dutch Milk price calculator Arla has been in the bottom regions in recent months. And since there is no increase, it will remain that way.

'Increases like never before'
Arthur Fearnall, the co-operative's chairman, says manufactured dairy prices are currently rising like never before. And although the milk price will not increase further for February, members expect a favorable outlook, according to him. This means that member dairy farmers are presented with a sausage. Yet it is strange that the milk price for February does not rise further, given the raw material value of milk (based on skimmed milk powder and butter) has risen to above €50.

In basket FrieslandCampina
Arla's milk price is a trend setter and is also included in the determination of FrieslandCampina's guaranteed price. The Scandinavian dairy cooperative often shows a different picture. The milk price was reduced last September, while dairy prices were rising rapidly. The other processors in the milk price comparator did increase milk prices in that month. The unchanged February milk price does not therefore have to be a harbinger of a leveling off trend at other processors.
