A business partnership in the marketing of dairy ingredients between FrieslandCampina and Danone has the potential to deliver almost 25% CO2 reduction. More than 70% of this has already been achieved so far, the Amersfoort cooperative reports.
FrieslandCampina has now signed a six-year contract with Danone (two times three years) for the purchase of dairy ingredients with a low CO2 footprint. In addition, a CO2 reduction of 17% has been recorded in recent years. This concerns limiting greenhouse gas emissions as calculated using the cycle pointer over the period 2015-2020. During the second part of the contract period, an additional 7% CO2 reduction can be achieved on the ingredients supplied to Danone, FrieslandCampina reports.
The emission reduction has been contractually agreed with Danone. This was offset by an extra price because of the more sustainable results, so that this also benefits the members, says FrieslandCampina.
The members have to do it
The members of the cooperative must ensure this through a series of measures that are now well-known, such as increasing the protein harvest from their own land, optimizing the feed ration of the cows and by means of sustainable energy generation.
Both FrieslandCampina and Danone want to move towards a CO2-neutral and preferably climate-positive dairy chain. Other goals are: better soil health, 'regenerative' agriculture and conservation of biodiversity.
