1 February 2022 - Stef Wissink

Trading on the feed market is going well. While pricing is fairly stable, it should be noted that traders are not dissatisfied with the volume traded in recent weeks.

Due to the high milk and feed prices, dairy farmers are constantly looking for an optimal ration that keeps the milk production as high as possible. According to insiders, the good demand from the dairy sector is a factor that contributes to the fairly continuous roughage trade for the time of the year.

Good grass difficult to obtain
Silage, especially of good quality, is difficult to find and is well paid. The fairly wet summer has ensured that the supply is still tight. The DCA indication price for silage grass rises from €2,50 per tonne to €72,50 per tonne, the range is €70 to €80, for the better parties sometimes a little more. The trade in meadow hay continues smoothly and the indication prices are between €180 and €190 per tonne, a fraction lower than last week.

Maize and straw stable
The trade in silage maize and straw continues smoothly and prices are fairly stable. For wheat and barley straw the indication price is €132,50 per tonne, slightly higher than last week. Depending on the quality, the bandwidth for trading is between €125 and €140 per tonne. Maize for silage is traded, depending on the quality, for prices of between €65 and €80 per tonne.

By-products unchanged tight
The situation in the by-products market has changed little. The supply is limited and the demand from dairy farming is high. The indication prices for spent grains are at a high level, but are now stable: €3,20 per percent dry matter. Feed potatoes are also hard to come by and are listed at €45 per ton.
