Phosphate seller is looking at The Hague, trade is closed

9 February 2022 - Stef Wissink

There is currently little trade in phosphate rights. Sellers are waiting for clarity from politics, which means that the supply of rights is currently small and the trade is 'locked' according to brokers.

Minister of Agriculture Henk Staghouwer recently indicated that he expects the skimming percentage when selling phosphate rights to increase from 20% to 10% this year. It is also unclear when exactly this will take place. This ensures that few phosphate rights are currently offered.

Sometimes purchasing parties would like to do business directly. Because of the options mentioned by Staghouwer for introducing animal rights to replace phosphate rights, they want to be sure that stable occupancy in combination with phosphate rights is up to standard. Buyers currently have to dig deeper into their pockets.

The market needs clarity
Mediators expect that little will change in the current situation for the time being. However, purchasing parties will increasingly challenge the price level, especially if prices rise further. The market is therefore closed, it is reported.

The price quotes lead to a DCA quotation for phosphate rights of €148,50 per kilo, for 100% usable rights. That is €9,50 more than a week earlier.
