For the second consecutive year, the US dairy sector has set an export record. The volume growth in 2021 can be seen as a great achievement, given the logistical difficulties in the chain.
The export of cheese, skimmed milk powder, whey, lactose and liquid milk and cream broke record volumes last year. Only milk protein concentrate and baby milk powder record a volume loss. On balance, almost 2,3 million tons of dairy were exported last year, which represents an increase of 10%. Due to the increased prices, the underlying value even increased by 18% to $7,7 billion.
Krysta Harden, CEO of the US Dairy Export Council (USDEC), calls the volume increase a great achievement in view of the problems in logistics. Harden expects export growth to continue in the coming years. Last year, 17% of American milk was sold outside the country's borders.
Significant sales growth in Mexico
Of the total export value, $1,7 billion goes to neighboring Mexico, which represents a growth of almost 30% compared to 2020. This growth is mainly due to the well-functioning Mexican economy. Sales to the Southeast Asia region have also increased, by 11% to $1,3. Canada is the third largest sales market in terms of underlying value. Sales grew 11% last year to $917 million.
