Dutch cheesemakers have won seven gold medals at the biennial world championship in Wisconsin. In total, they took home 21 prizes. It's nice PR and helps in the US market too.
The largest cheese maker in the Netherlands, FrieslandCampina, took home the most prizes: three gold medals and a total of fourteen prizes. Two of the three prizes were for cow's milk cheeses (Holland Master Cantenaar and Vermeer) and one for a goat's milk cheese. At FrieslandCampina, various teams participated, including from Steenderen and Lutjewinkel.
Cono cheesemakers also won gold twice with cow's milk cheeses (Beemster Royaal and Beemster Royaal Grand Cru). In addition, the cheesemaker from Westbeemster won another prize with a low-fat cheese.
Two second prizes for De Graafstroom
Cheesemaker De Graafstroom won two second prizes with Gouda cheeses. Westland Kaas and Van der Heiden both won first prize, with an Old Amsterdam mild and an old Gouda cheese (Roemer sweet).
A total of 351 prizes were awarded for all kinds of cheese. In addition, entrants could compete for prizes for the best butter, whey and whey ingredients.
