The share of PlanetProof milk in the Netherlands is growing. The number of certified laying poultry companies that produce under the quality mark is also increasing rapidly, according to figures from Stichting Milieukeur.
The area of managed grassland that is cultivated according to the requirements of the label increased by 3% last year to 47.907 hectares. The amount of PlanetProof milk in circulation is not disclosed for reasons of competition. In the Netherlands, FrieslandCampina and Farmel have embraced the quality mark, representing a total of eight hundred participating dairy farmers.
The requirements have been further tightened for this year, including the percentage of home-grown protein increased by 5 percentage points to 55% as the basic standard. Nevertheless, further growth is on the horizon, given FrieslandCampina the North Holland cheese will also be marketed with the PlanetProof stamp. The dairy cooperative is looking for about eighty suppliers for this.
Arable farming and poultry farming
Earlier this month, it was announced that the arable acreage covered by the label requirements grew by almost a quarter last year to approximately 55.000 hectares on just under 2.000 farms. The number of certified laying poultry farms also grew considerably last year, by 24% to 31 companies. However, the roll-out of the quality mark in poultry farming is still in its infancy compared to dairy farming and the arable farming sector.
